Why is my website traffic dropping?

By · Facts checked Oct 8, 2026

The short answer

Common causes are technical errors, Google algorithm updates, seasonal shifts in demand, site migrations, and spam or security problems. A growing cause in 2026 is AI summaries and zero-click results, which answer questions on Google itself, so fewer searchers click through.

Start in Google Search Console. Google's own guide lists the usual causes: algorithm updates, technical errors, security issues, spam or manual actions, seasonality, site moves, and reporting glitches.

Look at impressions and clicks together. If both fell, something affects whether you show up at all. If impressions held but clicks fell, people still see you but click less.

That second pattern often points to AI answers. Pew found clicks on regular results fell from 15% to 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared. SparkToro data shows 68.01% of US Google searches ended with no click in early 2026.

Example: a bookkeeping firm might see steady impressions for "how to file quarterly taxes" but half the clicks. The page still ranks. Google now answers the basics on the results page.

Fixes differ by cause. For AI-driven drops, focus on questions only you can answer well, and track leads and AI mentions, not only visits. Sovereo Web Works offers a free 20-minute AI visibility review.
