What is llms.txt, and do I need it?
llms.txt is a proposed Markdown file at the root of a website that gives AI tools a short summary and links to key pages. It is not an official standard, Google says you do not need AI text files to appear in its AI features, and it is cheap to add but not a ranking lever.
Jeremy Howard proposed llms.txt in September 2024. The file sits at yoursite.com/llms.txt. It uses Markdown: a title, a short summary, and lists of links to important pages.
The idea is to help AI agents find your best content quickly. The project's own site calls it a proposal and invites community input.
Google is direct about it. It says you do not need new machine readable files, AI text files, or special markup for AI Overviews or AI Mode.
So should you add one? It costs little and will not hurt. But do not expect it to raise rankings or win citations by itself. Clear pages, crawl access, and good answers matter more.
Sovereo Web Works can add an llms.txt file during a build, but treats it as a minor extra.
