The Vote You Didn't Cast

By Todd Allyn ·

The Conviction

On June 21 Colombia chooses between two governing models that agree on almost nothing. Anyone holding residency, property, or a working bank account in that country is a position in that vote. Most of them cannot cast a ballot in it. They will live under the result regardless.

Colombia is not the only one. Peru voted on June 7 and split almost exactly in half, the result still unsettled a week later. Across the Andes the ground is being repriced by ballots this month, and the residents most exposed to the outcome are often the ones with no vote in it.

This is the part of the sovereign-individual thesis people skip. The passport is treated as serious. The asset structure is treated as serious. The place you actually live gets filed under lifestyle. It is not lifestyle. The country you live in sets your tax exposure, your banking access, your currency, and the rules that can change inside ninety days of a new administration you had no vote in. The flag you treat most casually is often the one with the most direct claim on your money. And it is not only the ballot. The prices that set your cost of living, oil, food, the metals inside everything you buy, are decided just as far from you, in a strait, a harvest, and a refinery you will never see.

The move is not to predict the winner. It is to be indifferent to the winner. You price the exit before the trigger date, not after it. If a result nine days out would force a banking or residency decision under pressure, the time to make it was last month. The reader who already holds the option watches June 21 as information. The reader who does not watches it as risk. This issue is about closing that gap before the count, not after.
