The Pivot Position
The Conviction
China hosted the President of the United States and the President of Russia in the same building five days apart, and that is not the story. The story is what the double summit reveals about how power now works.
The old model said power belongs to the biggest economy or the strongest military. The new model says power belongs to whoever sits between two parties who need each other and cannot deal with each other directly. China did not pick a side between Washington and Moscow in May. It made both sides come to Beijing. It collected from both. That is the pivot position, and it is the most valuable position in the system now forming.
This issue tracks the pivot position appearing at every scale at once. A nation between two superpowers. A rebel militia between a mineral deposit and a buyer. A sovereign wealth fund between regional war and global capital. The operator who understands it stops asking which side to join and starts asking where the bridge is.
