Which countries are best for Americans to live in 2026?

By · Facts checked Oct 13, 2026

The short answer

The 2026 Sovereo Index, updated 8 October 2026, puts Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden in a tie for first at 84.9. The Netherlands (84.7) and Australia (84.4) follow. The United States scores 77.3. The best country for you depends on your income, health needs, family and visa options.

The Sovereo Index ranks 192 countries from 0 to 100 using public data. The overall score is the average of six pillars. They are Income, Education, Health and Longevity, Environment, Lifestyle and Belonging, and Legacy and Sovereignty.

As of 8 October 2026, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden share first place at 84.9. Next come the Netherlands (84.7), Australia (84.4), the United Kingdom (84.1) and Ireland (84.0). The United States scores 77.3 and places 28th.

A high score is not the same as a good fit. The Index measures how well a country performs for its residents on average. It does not weigh your budget, your visa route, your language or your medical needs.

Americans already choose very different places. The Federal Voting Assistance Program estimated that 4.4 million US citizens lived abroad in 2022, not counting the military. Canada, Mexico and the United Kingdom hosted the most.

Mexico, the second largest host, ranks 107th on the Index. Cost, distance, climate and family ties often matter more to a mover than a national average.

To match countries to your own life, the free Sovereo Best-Fit Countries tool scores all 192 ranked countries against your answers. It returns the three that fit you best and stores no data.

Then check the practical gates: a visa you qualify for, health coverage, and taxes. The IRS says US citizens are taxed on worldwide income from all sources, wherever they live.
