How long does it take to get permanent residency abroad?

By · Facts checked Oct 8, 2026

The short answer

Five years of legal residence is a common benchmark, including in the EU and for most migrant visa holders in Colombia, as of October 2026. Some countries, such as Mexico for qualifying retirees, grant permanent residency directly.

There is no single answer. Each country sets its own path. But five years of legal residence is a common rule.

In the EU, non-EU nationals can gain long-term resident status after five years of legal, continuous residence, per the European Commission. The EU proposed changes to these rules in April 2022, and talks were still ongoing.

In Colombia, many migrant (M) visa holders, such as spouses of Colombians, need five years before applying for a resident (R) visa. Colombia's Foreign Ministry lists shorter times for some family categories. Long absences can also void an M visa.

Some countries skip the wait for certain groups. Mexico's consulates offer permanent residence visas to retirees and pensioners who meet income or savings tests. Amounts are set in pesos and change often.

This is educational research, not legal advice. Confirm timelines with the official consulate or a qualified immigration professional.
