# Is SEO dead in 2026?

No, but it is changing: 68.01% of US Google searches ended without a click in January to April 2026, per SparkToro and Similarweb data, yet Google says SEO fundamentals still matter for its AI features.

Clicks are harder to win. SparkToro's 2026 study, reported by Search Engine Land, found 68.01% of US Google searches ended with no click. That was up from 60.45% in 2024.

AI summaries are part of the reason. Pew found people clicked a regular result on 8% of visits with an AI summary, versus 15% without one. Clicks on links inside the summary happened on about 1% of visits.

But AI answers are built from web pages. Google says existing SEO basics still matter for AI Overviews and AI Mode. Pages must be indexed to appear as supporting links.

What is fading is SEO as a pure traffic game. Being findable, clear, and trusted still counts. Measure leads and mentions, not only visits.

Sovereo Web Works builds for both search results and AI answers, and reports on each monthly.
