# How long until AI tools cite my website?

There is no set timeline, and no one can guarantee citations. Google says search changes can take from a few hours to several months to show, and OpenAI says ChatGPT search reflects robots.txt changes in about 24 hours, but being cited depends on whether your page is the best answer.

Two things must happen first. The AI tool's crawler must be able to reach your page, and the page must be indexed.

Access changes are quick. OpenAI says ChatGPT search reflects robots.txt updates in about 24 hours. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear as a link in AI Overviews.

Ranking and citation take longer. Google's SEO Starter Guide says some changes take effect in hours and others take several months. It suggests waiting a few weeks before judging a change.

Google also says no one can guarantee a top ranking. Treat any promise of fast AI citations the same way.

A realistic plan is to track citations monthly from launch and judge results over a few months, not days. Sovereo Web Works reports citations monthly so you can see the trend.
