Iraq weakens its dinar as Hormuz cuts oil income
OBSERVE
Iraq's cabinet adopted Resolution No. 544 of 2026 on October 6, per Iraqi News. The new rate took effect October 7, per the Ministry of Finance. Banks may now sell dollars to the public at up to 1,520 dinars. The prior public rate was 1,320, per the Central Bank of Iraq (CBI) via Shafaq News and Bloomberg; AP put it at about 1,300. The street rate jumped above 1,700 dinars per dollar after the announcement, per AP. Reserves fell to about $80 billion by August, per Bloomberg and Al Jazeera.
ORIENTATION
The decisive source is the cabinet resolution, seen only through Iraqi News and Shafaq News reports. It establishes the new rates. Price effects rest on market reports, not measured inflation data.
SO WHAT
Oil pays for more than 90% of the federal budget, per Al Jazeera. Each oil dollar now converts into more dinars for salaries. The same change raises the dinar cost of imported food, medicine and inputs. Most Iraqis cannot buy dollars at the official rate and pay the street price, per Al Jazeera. A political response is visible. Dozens of lawmakers opposed the decision in a joint statement, per Al Jazeera. Assessment: household buying power falls if sellers reprice at the street rate, assuming salaries stay unchanged. Unknown: measured consumer prices since October 7.
EXPOSURE
This reaches Income and Health. Public employees paid in dinars, families buying imported food and medicine, and importers carry the exposure. Decision question: does a household or business budget in Iraq assume the new rate holds? The constraint is access to the official rate. A reader without dinar income, dinar costs or Iraq trade has no new decision today.
WATCH
Sovereo review, October 11, 2026: the street dinar rate, last reported above 1,700 per dollar by AP. A street rate falling back toward 1,520 would weaken this assessment.
