South Africa sets record fuel prices from October 7

OBSERVE

South Africa's Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources announced new fuel prices on October 5, 2026. From October 7, petrol 95 rises 333 cents a litre. Diesel with 0.005% sulphur rises 324.38 cents. Wholesale illuminating paraffin rises 358 cents, the largest increase. Inland petrol 95 will cost R30.25 a litre, per TimesLive. Reuters put the petrol rise at about 12%.

ORIENTATION

The decisive source is the department's own statement, a primary document. It establishes the prices set, not their effect. Reuters and TimesLive reported the same figures separately. Neither measures what fares or food will cost.

SO WHAT

The increase is imported. International product shortages added 329.07 cents to the basic petrol price and 357.23 cents to paraffin, the department said. The rand barely moved, from 16.213 to 16.212 per dollar. So currency did not drive it. The state also raised its slate levy to 87.66 cents a litre to cover a R10.45 billion deficit. Responses are already visible. The South African Reserve Bank raised its near term inflation forecasts "mainly because of higher fuel prices," per Daily Maverick. It has raised rates twice since the Iran conflict began, per Reuters. The minibus taxi council SANTACO said it "cannot provide certainty" on fare increases, per IOL. It asked government for transport subsidies.

EXPOSURE

This reaches Income and Lifestyle. Taxi commuters, delivery firms and diesel dependent operators carry the cost first. Assessment: fares and freight charges face pressure, assuming operators pass on fuel costs. Decision question: does a transport or operating budget set on September prices still hold through November? The constraint is regulation. Prices change monthly by statute, so buyers cannot shop for a cheaper pump. Commuters do not set their own fares. A reader without South African fuel exposure has no new decision today.

WATCH

October 7, 2026: the new regulated prices take effect, per the department. If taxi associations hold fares through October, the pass through to commuters is weaker than assessed.

POSITION: Energy, Money and Credit | Income, Lifestyle | Decision: Does a transport or operating budget set on September prices still hold?

Decision Register

The Weekly Decision

The weekly question is how a household or firm budgets for transport when fuel import costs, not currency, drive prices. Observation alone cannot settle it, because pass through to fares and food has not yet been measured.
