Yemen's government opens an offensive along the Red Sea route
OBSERVE
Yemen's President Rashad al-Alimi announced a military operation against the Houthis in a televised speech on October 4, 2026, per CNN and Reuters. He said it would run "until the country is liberated from the grip of the terrorist militia," per Reuters. Last month the Houthis seized the Bab el-Mandeb strait and about 150 kilometres of Red Sea coast, per Reuters. Reported: Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree claimed missile and drone strikes on two Saudi Aramco sites, in Riyadh and the Khurais area, per Al Jazeera. Saudi Arabia gave no immediate response, and independent confirmation was not located.
ORIENTATION
CNN and Reuters report the announcement from separate sourcing. Battle figures come only from the Yemeni government, carried by Asharq Al-Awsat, and from Houthi statements. Neither side's casualty claims are independently verified.
SO WHAT
The strait now carries more weight than before. Bab el-Mandeb is the Red Sea's southern exit, and it has gained importance as an alternative to the Strait of Hormuz, per Reuters. Aramco's East-West pipeline runs at about 80% of capacity, Nasser said, per The National on October 5. He said Brent would have reached $200 a barrel without it. Unknown: how much of that bypass crude moves through Bab el-Mandeb; the sources opened give no volume. The human cost is already present. The fighting has displaced tens of thousands of people, per Reuters. Three in four families in parts of Yemen face hunger, per World Food Programme data cited by Reuters. The observed response is military: the Saudi-led coalition reported 97 targeting operations early Sunday, per Al Jazeera, and the US provides intelligence, per Reuters.
EXPOSURE
This reaches Health and Lifestyle for Yemeni families in Taiz and along the coast, where supply access is disrupted. It reaches Income for shippers, crews and fuel importing firms that price cargo on the Red Sea route. The decision question: does a fuel or freight budget built on Brent near $100 still hold while the Red Sea exit is contested? The constraint is routing. Hormuz remains restricted, so few buyers can switch routes. A reader without Red Sea shipping, fuel import or Yemen family exposure has no new decision today.
WATCH
October 6, 2026, Sovereo review: control of the Bab el-Mandeb coastline, against the roughly 150 kilometres the Houthis took last month, per Reuters. Government forces retaking that coast, confirmed by two independent sources, would weaken this assessment.

The Weekly Decision
The weekly question is how a firm or household budgets for fuel and freight when both Gulf exits carry risk at once. Observation alone cannot settle it, because the sources do not show how much bypass crude moves through the Red Sea.
