Australia's fourth rate rise of 2026 reaches mortgage bills on October 9

OBSERVE

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) raised its cash rate target by 0.25 points to 4.60% on September 29, 2026, per its board statement. ABC News reports it is the fourth rise this year and the highest rate since November 2011. The RBA cited higher global energy prices from the broadened Middle East conflict and technology price pressure from artificial intelligence demand. Reported: all four major banks will lift variable home loan rates by 0.25 points from October 9, per ABC News on September 30. Macquarie Bank follows on October 15, per ABC News and Savings.com.au.

ORIENTATION

The RBA statement is primary and establishes the decision and its stated reasons. The October 9 bank dates come only from ABC News relaying bank statements. Repayment estimates come from a union and a bank.

SO WHAT

The oil shock now reaches Australian households through the mortgage rate, not only the fuel pump. The Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) estimates the rise adds A$110 a month to an average A$731,000 mortgage, per ABC News. It puts the added cost of all four rises this year at A$460 a month. Westpac puts the cost at about A$79 a month on a A$500,000 loan. Savers see the other side: Ubank lifts its ongoing savings rate to 5.35% from October 6, per Savings.com.au. NAB has already urged worried customers to contact the bank early, per ABC News. Assessment: variable rate borrowers carry this cost first, assuming lenders keep passing rises on in full.

EXPOSURE

This reaches Income and Lifestyle for households with variable rate mortgages, and Legacy for families saving toward a home. The decision question: can the household budget carry a higher repayment, and for how long? Borrowers do not set the rate, and refinancing depends on lender approval. A reader without an Australian variable rate loan has no new decision today.

WATCH

November 3, 2026: the RBA's next board decision, due at 2:30 p.m., per the RBA's 2026 meeting schedule. Money markets priced about a 20% chance of a November rise, per ABC News. A sustained fall in oil prices would weaken the energy link the RBA cited.

POSITION: Money and Credit, Energy | Income, Lifestyle, Legacy | Decision: Can a household with an Australian variable rate mortgage carry a higher repayment from October 9, 2026?
