Tigray's war reaches Afar and the road that carries Ethiopia's fuel

OBSERVE

Fighting between Tigrayan forces and Ethiopia's army resumed after September 22, 2026, per Doctors Without Borders (MSF). Tigrayan fighters took the Afar town of Erebti on Sunday, September 27, after heavy shelling, per a humanitarian source cited by AFP via Euronews. They were advancing toward Afdera, about 100 kilometres east. Government aligned forces captured Alamata, 120 kilometres south of Mekelle, per Reuters and Al Jazeera.

SO WHAT

The Afar push aims to cut supplies from Djibouti, which carries almost all of Ethiopia's international trade cargo, including fuel, per AFP via Euronews. Reported: roughly 350 trucks carry fuel from Djibouti's Horizon terminal to Ethiopia each day, per Capital, an Addis Ababa weekly, on September 27. Euronews reports the corridor remains open. The health cost is already here. War wounded patients at Korem and Alamata hospitals rose from about 180 to more than 420 in 48 hours, per MSF. MSF suspended work at Alamata hospital and moved staff to hospital care. Reported: about 150,000 people are displaced in Afar, per a humanitarian source cited by AFP. Assessment: any closure of the road would reach fuel users across Ethiopia, assuming no other route can carry the load.
