# Which countries score highest on the Sovereo Index in 2026?

In the 2026 Sovereo Index, updated 8 October 2026, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden tie for first at 84.9, followed by the Netherlands (84.7). Twelve of the top fifteen are in Europe; the exceptions are Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

The Sovereo Index scores 194 countries from 0 to 100 and ranks 192 of them; Monaco and North Korea lack core data. The overall score is the average of six pillars: Income, Education, Health and Longevity, Environment, Lifestyle and Belonging, and Legacy and Sovereignty. Capital and Enterprise is a separate lens and is not part of the overall score.

The top fifteen as of 8 October 2026, in order: Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden (all 84.9, a tie at one decimal), Netherlands (84.7), Australia (84.4), United Kingdom (84.1), Ireland (84.0), Denmark (83.5), Germany (83.5), Canada (83.2), Switzerland (82.9), Luxembourg (82.7), New Zealand (82.5) and Belgium (81.9). Liechtenstein, first in the July edition, now scores 81.5.

The leaders rarely top any single pillar. What they share is balance, with no weak area. Long lives, strong institutions, clean environments and open societies tend to appear together.

The data come from public sources. Health and Longevity uses life expectancy from the UNDP Human Development Report 2025. Education uses the UNDP education index. Other pillars draw on Yale's Environmental Performance Index, the Heritage Foundation and the World Bank.

A high world rank is not a personal recommendation. A retiree on a fixed income may care most about cost and health care. A family may weigh schools and safety. The Index is a starting list, and your own weights decide the finish.
