# How do I choose the best country to move to?

There is no best country in general, only the best fit for your income, health, family and goals. Score a short list on the same factors, weight them for your own life, then test the top choice in person before you commit.

Start with what you need the move to do. A remote worker, a family with children and a retiree on a fixed income are solving different problems. Write down your top three goals before you look at any country.

Then compare places on the same factors. Common ones are income and cost, health and life expectancy, schools, environment, safety and belonging, and the rule of law. The UN Development Programme's Human Development Index uses three of these: a long and healthy life, education, and income per person.

Add the factors most lists skip. One is the rule of law. The World Justice Project's Rule of Law Index, built from household and expert surveys, covers 143 countries in its 2025 edition. Another is whether your money can move back out. The Sovereo Index scores this separately as Capital and Enterprise.

Here is a simple worked example. Give each factor a weight that adds to 100. Say health is 40, cost is 30 and safety is 30. A country scoring 80, 60 and 70 earns 32 plus 18 plus 21, or 71. Run every option through the same math.

Finally, test the winner. Visit in the hardest season, rent before you buy, and talk to people who have lived there for years. A ranking narrows the field. It does not replace seeing daily life for yourself.
