# How do commodity prices reach my grocery bill?

World prices for grains, oils, meat, dairy and sugar feed into food costs, but most of a grocery dollar pays for processing, transport, energy and retail. USDA data show farms received 11.8 cents of each US food dollar in 2024, so commodity swings reach shelves diluted and with a delay.

Food starts as traded commodities such as wheat, corn, vegetable oils, dairy, meat and sugar. The FAO Food Price Index tracks world prices for this basket. It stood at 136.0 points in September 2026, up 1.5 percent from August.

Those raw costs are only part of the shelf price. The USDA Economic Research Service found farms received 11.8 cents per US food dollar in 2024. The other 88.2 cents went to marketing: processing, packaging, transport, energy, retail and food service.

Measured as value added by farm production alone, the USDA puts the share at 6.7 cents per food dollar in 2024. Wages, rent, fuel and packaging therefore drive much of what you pay.

This structure shapes how shocks move. A big jump in a commodity raises costs for processors over months, as old contracts and inventory run down. Energy and transport costs touch almost every step, so oil prices matter as well.

For a household, the effect is stronger for lightly processed foods like cooking oil, eggs or flour. It is weaker for heavily processed or restaurant food. Shares differ by country, so local prices can move differently.
